HISTORY Who we are and How We Began
Originally constructed in 1942 and known then as the Camp Stewart Army Airfield, the airport has historically served as training grounds for armor and anti-aircraft artillery units.
In 2007, the Liberty County Board of Commissioners, the city of Hinesville and the Liberty County Development Authority partnered to construct a new 13,825-square-foot terminal that houses both military and civilian operations. Aircraft hangars are available on site for your aircraft should you wish to keep it locally at the airport, a spacious passenger terminal, and ample ramp space, the airport adopted the name MidCoast Regional Airport to reflect its convenient location between the Savannah and Brunswick airports and its proximity to Charleston, S.C. and Jacksonville, Fla.
Today, the airport is a cooperative effort between the City of Hinesville, the Liberty County Board of Commissioners, the Liberty County Development Authority, and the United States Army, acting under a Joint Management Board (JMB).
The airport is a joint use facility. Meaning, the Military (US Army) and the Civilians (General Aviation) share the same facility. It is a class D airspace; it is very easy to get in and out of the airspace/airport with the help of very friendly and helpful air traffic controllers that work at Wright Army Airfield/MidCoast Regional Airport.
One side of the airport is dedicated to General Aviation aircraft with FBO facilities, Hangars, aircraft ramp parking is available close to FBO for short- or longer term stays.
